U2
Irish
Pop/Rock from the Heart of Ireland
A
couple weeks ago, I read that U2 grossed $167 million in 2001 from the "Elevation"
tour. That was the year's record. And yes, they are Irish. I
got on the U2 bandwagon later than most people back in the 80s. I remember "Sunday,
Bloody Sunday", but I don't think I really heard that song until the release
of "The Joshua Tree" album when I was blown away by "With Or Without
You". That song still stirs my blood. Now
they're everywhere it seems. I even saw a live concert of U2s recently (missed
the name). Bono was lying on the stage. His head lay next to some woman who he
had helped onto the stage...the passion in his voice. That's one of the things
about Celtic music for me. Passion. And I do my best to emulate that same passion
when I sing. U2
has all that and more. The "rebel" songs of the 80s drew me in deeper
though it wasn't till I started playing music that I learned what all about the
atrocities of "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" really were when British paratroopers
killed 13 unarmed and peaceful Irish civilians in Derry in cold blood. http://larkspirit.com/bloodysunday/
Their
latest album, "All That You Can't Leave Behind" is a return to the musical
style that made them superstars. And it is fantastic. Last year, U2 won three
Grammys for "Beautiful Day" from that album. Now, they're up back for
more.
While
they don't play traditional "Celtic" music, thier music is steeped in
Celtic roots, and their music has had a world-wide impact, and I hope they will
continue to inspire people for many years to come.
