The Pogues - Celtic Punk Rock
by
Joe Wallace
In 1982 Shane MacGowan met future Pogue Spider Stacy in London. They began working together with McGowan's former Nipple Erectors bandmate Jim Fearnley, busking and playing pub dates as Pogue Mahone. As they grew as a working group, several other musicians were installed in the lineup, including banjo and guitar player Jem Finer and Cait O'Riordan on bass. Pogue Mahone began with traditional Irish songs, but MacGowan stared injecting his own material into the shows.
Soon, the name shortened to The Pogues and the indie single, Dark Streets of London became a favorite. In quick succession they joined the Clash on tour, signed to Stiff Records, and released the first album, Red Roses For Me.
Elvis Costello produced the next effort, Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash. The Pogues lineup by then included a new guitar player, Phillip Chevron. After working with Costello the band took time off to appear in a film by Alex Cox.
The 1998 album Should I Fall From Grace With God brought in Terry Woods to replace Cait O'Riordan. 1990's Hell's Ditch featured less of the troubled Shane MacGowan and more vocals by Jem Finer and Spider Stacy. McGowan's drug and alcohol problems had become an issue and he was fired in 1991. MacGowan soon returned with his own group, The Popes.
In 1996 the Pogues called it a day after two lukewarm albums and occasional help from Joe Strummer on tour. 2001 had the group back together including MacGowan for a holiday tour, they also performed a series of shows in the UK in 2004.
