SolasSolas, whose name means "light" in gaelic, was founded in 1996 by multi-instrumentalist Seamus Egan and has been called "the best Irish traditional band in the world" (Boston Herald). During their 6 years as a band, the group has gone through some personnel changes, though the strong core of Seamus Egan (on flute, whistles, tenor banjo, guitar, bodhran, and even piano) and Winifred Horan (on fiddle and backup vocals) has remained. Deidre Scanlon replaced original vocalist, Karan Casey; Donal Clancy and then Eamon McElholm replaced guitarist John Doyle; Mick McAuley replaced John Williams on the accordian (and also provides vocals). Despite these numerous changes, Solas's fast-driving instrumental sets, interesting Celtic spins on modern songs (including some by such greats as Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie), and composed tunes influenced by other world music have not changed. The group is, at its essence, a traditional Irish ensemble with a modern twist. Since their inception, Solas has produced 6 albums, some more traditional than others and a live DVD. Most of the members of the group, both past and present, have produced solo albums (generally with the support of the other Solas members) and have also performed the music for the Irish dance phenomenon Dancing on Dangerous Ground (with music composed by founding member, Seamus Egan). A frequent touring ensemble, Solas has been seen in the USA, Canada, Ireland, and Germany. Discography
