Flogging Molly
Irish Punk Rock
by Catherine L. Tully
Flogging Molly is a band with a lot of influences that can be more than a little difficult to pin down in terms of style. If you listen carefully, you can hear elements of folk, thrash, punk and traditional Irish music in their sound. The range of instruments that the band members play helps contribute to the variety of sounds, and you can hear a mandolin one minute and an electric guitar the next. There are quite a few instruments involved in this band's lineup, with many of the players singing vocals besides founding member Dave King. The fiddle, tin whistle and uilleann pipes are played by Bridget Regan, the electric guitar by Dennis Casey, the accordion and concertina by Matt Hensley, the drums by George Schwindt and the mandolin, banjo, bazouki and mandola by Robert Schmidt. All of these sounds mixed together, along with King's lyrics and voice contribute to their unique sound.
King decided to mix the sounds of his youth with more modern influences, which many would consider punk rock. Starting out as the Dave King Band, they would eventually grow into Flogging Molly and release a live CD titled, Alive Behind The Green Door as their first effort. Other albums include Swagger, Drunken Lullabies and their latest effort, Within A Mile of Home.
