Andy
M. Stewart Silly
Wizard Singer/Songwriter, now soloistFor
those who don't know him, Andy M. Stewart was the lead vocalist for the Scottish
folk band, Silly Wizard. It wasn't until I got online that I realized he was also
the author of the beloved Ren Faire song, "Queen of All Argyle". We
had actually worked out an arrangement to "Queen of All Argyle" from
an mp3 we found online. I loved our version. But then lo and behold, I heard the
master play it, and just couldn't bare playing it the same way again. But
Andy has written a lot more than just that song. He wrote, "Ramblin' Rover"
and dozens more famous songs. Andy M. Stewart is a legend in the Scottish and
Celtic community as The first great Scottish songwriter. Well,
the reason for mentioning him here is that at long last, he is coming to play
in the USA! This comes directly from Andy's webmistress, Kate Akers of Cantaria.
Oh, and not just his webmistress, she's now also his booking agent. There are
a dozen dates lined up throughout the US this fall, including a November 2nd date
at the Emerald Mist in Dallas. Last I heard, there's a possibility he'll hit Austin
on Nov 1st. Drop
by his website and listen to his music for all the details, but you can be sure
I'll keep you informed, and I'll also be at the show if possible. Andy
M. Stewart CDs: Man
in the Moon (1994) My personal favorite CD of
Andy's featuring the title track "Man in the Moon", plus, the comical
favorite "Errant Apprentice" and the eternal song, "Lakes of Ponchartrain".
Fantastic album and a definite one to own.
At
It Again (1990) Joined together with guitar wizard Manus Lunny, Andy
delivers a fun traditional album filled with beautiful and oft time humourous
songs. Sings
the Songs of Robert Burns Some of the songs Andy is most famous for
are his renditions of Robert Burns songs like "My Love Is Like A Red, Red
Rose". This album captures all of Rabbie Burns' best songs by Scotland's
best singer.
Donegal
Rain (1997) Andy's most recent album featuring his fantastic storytelling
in song. "Donegeal Rain" is likely to bring tears to your eyes. "Ramblin'
Irishman" is another favorite of mine.
Live
Wizardry This album features Andy's songwriting at his best with
songs like "Queen of All Argyle" and "Ramblin Rover". But
it also has such greats as "Valley of Strathmore", "Blackbird"
and "Golden, Golden". A must for any Andy M. Stewart collection. Website: Homepage
